A woodburning may be displayed in many ways. A decorative
box may be functional or displayed on a table or behind the glass doors
of a cabinet. A small wooden plaque may be placed on a small easel and
displayed likewise. Or it may be hung on a wall beside the larger works.
I like to hang my woodburnings on a contrasting wall, usually a white wall.
It makes the wood stand out boldly! But a series of woodburnings could
also look good on a paneled wall. But no matter what type of wall you put
it on, you need a method of hanging it.
If your woodburning is on a "plaque", usually rectangular or oval with
a beveled edge, it is relatively easy to locate the center to place a hanger.
However, I like using natural wood cut from trees, with the bark along
the edges. On these it is not easy to find the point at which it will hang
straight. Well, here's how I do it!
I use metal hangers that are about an inch wide with about five 'teeth'
for hanging on a nail. This means that I don't have to find the exact spot
to place the hanger. But you have to get close. Follow this procedure and
your woodburning will hang straight.
Pick up the wood piece and grasp it at the top between your thumb and forefinger.
Let the wood hang while you hold it loosely (but don't let it drop). Move
your fingers along the top until the piece of wood hangs straight. When
you have found this point, take a pencil and make a line centered on and
in-line with your finger on the back of the board.
Now take the hanger and position it such that the center 'tooth' gap is
on the top of the line where your finger was located. Then secure it in
place with the two small nails that came with the hanger.
Another way to hang it is to use picture frame hanging wire. Secure the
wire to the back of the board such that the center of the wire is about
where you made the mark. The wire should be about 4 - 5 inches long. There
will be a spot on the wire where the wood will hang straight.
Now, when you hang it on a nail in the wall, if it is not hanging straight,
simply move it one notch, one way or the other, until it hangs straight.
That's all there is to it.
