teeburn, thanks for the tips. i have never used any kind of transfer papers. i either freehand it right onto the wood, or i draw it out, scribble pencil ink all over the back side and then go over the drawing again to get the basic outline. i'm not going to ever waste money on some expensive paper. to me it's expensive anyways, 2-3 bucks for 1 sheet is not economical for someone like me who's unemployed. thank you all for your tips

I make my own graphite paper. I use a piece of copy paper and use a #2 pencil and shade the whole piece of paper on one side. I wipe off the excess graphite with a paper towel. Then I do my drawing on another paper and get it just the way I want it and then put my home-made transfer paper, graphite side down and put my drawing on top and tape it with easily removed tape. Then I trace my drawing, not pressing too hard or you may indent the wood. When I am finished I remove the drawing and transfer paper. It takes a little time, but I get a very light transfer line. I store that home-made transfer paper betwee two pieces of copy paper and use it until I can't use it any more. Works great for me. I do not like store bought transfer paper.

No problem, Jay. Believe me, I know all to well about being frugal. My husband and I are both disabled. So we are always on a strict budget. I use gift money and coupons when I need art supplies or equipment. Tracing paper is very inexpensive. That is basically what I do. I just don't put it all over the back. I just trace the lines, outline. I just need an edit button and learn not to be so long winded. To condense it and edit before I start typing. LOL!

i have to agree with sam on 2 points. cant draw and love fishing. my girlfriend has done some very good burns (considering the fact that i taught her over the internet) and all of hers are freehand. been after her to post them here. the only freehand i have done is when i miss tracing something OOPS. Teeburn's suggestion of using clear tracing paper will hopefully help me to correct that mistake.

I freehand or transfer depending on the picture. I like the transfer because its so much quicker. I can get a picture down in less time because I freehand the details as I burn. When I just freehand I get caught up and I am very bad at perception of size. Oh well can't do everything. I can get a heck of a life out of my graphite paper by only using it for outlines too. Good luck either way.
